Symptoms
A message on the AlphaSmart 3000 display will read:

"Bus Error Accessing: 0x00405555 Next Instruction At: 0x000274F4 Turn the unit off and then back on. Please email support@donjohnston.co.uk"

You will not be able to use Co:Writer SmartApplet or any others with the Alphasmart 3000 when this error is present.

Cause
This issue is caused by loading Co:Writer SmartApplet v1.0 on a more recent Alphasmart 3000. The newer AlphaSmart hardware has revised firmware which is not compatible with Co:Writer SmartApplet v1.0.

Resolution
The Alphasmart 3000 will need to be re-initialised and Co:Writer SmartApplet v1.6 loaded from the computer.

1. On your Alphasmart 3000, with the power off, hold down the RIGHT SHIFT plus the BACKSPACE keys. While these keys are depressed, turn the power ON.
2. A message will appear in your display reading: "Are you sure you want to reset the AlphaSmart to factory defaults? Press N for NO. Press Y for YES." Hit the "Y" key to advance.
3. When prompted for the password enter "tommy". This will re-initialize your Alphasmart 3000 enabling you to load the updated Co:Writer SmartApplet.
4. On your computer you will need to download the updater to Co:Writer SmartApplet v1.6 from our website at:

   The updater will automatically find your existing installation of the v1.0 loader (MUST already be installed) and upgrade it to the v1.6 version.
5. With your AlphaSmart 3000 connected to the computer, load the updated Co:Writer SmartApplet.
